Centurions’ Baylor Syrjala earns MCCAA Northern Player of Week honors

One player from the Montcalm Community College Centurions women’s basketball team has been recognized by the Michigan Community College Athletic Association for her performance last week. 

Baylor Syrjala, a freshman from Lakeview, Mich., was named MCCAA’s Northern Conference Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 8-14. The guard played two games in that span, leading the team in multiple categories in both its 72-68 win over South Suburban College, Dec. 12, and its 72-55 loss to Oakton Community College, Dec. 13 at the Dave Selmon Classic hosted by Grand Rapids Community College. 

Against South Suburban, Syrjala had a team-leading and career-high 24 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Against Oakton, she scored a team-leading 18 points and had nine rebounds and four assists. In recognition of her performances, Syrjala was also named to the All-Tournament team for the Dave Selmon Classic. 

Syrjala has been the team’s leading scorer in seven out of the team’s 11 games, so far. On the season, she averages 12.5 points a game, 6.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and has shot 39.3% from the field and 28.9% from three-point range.
